Oil Tank Abandonment Certificate In Suffolk County

The document people are actually searching for, and what it has to contain.

What matters before the work starts.

More people search for the certificate than for the digging, which makes sense. The paperwork is the thing that unblocks a sale, a policy or a loan.

Who Issues The Certificate

In Islip the abandonment certificate comes from the certified company that performed the work, not from a town inspector. The Town's permit requirements ask for a physical inspection where a tank is installed, or an abandonment certificate where a tank is abandoned.

So the document's weight comes from the company standing behind it and from the closed permit sitting alongside it.

The Written Declaration To The County

For a tank that is not exempt from Suffolk's storage rules, any declaration that a facility is abandoned, or is being taken temporarily out of service, must be made to the Commissioner in writing. The tank must then be emptied immediately and dealt with within ninety days of that declaration.

Ninety days runs from the declaration, not from the day you decided to sell the house.

What Islip Accepts As Proof

A closed permit against the property, the abandonment certificate or removal record, and where soil was sampled, the laboratory report. That set answers the question a buyer's attorney or an underwriter is asking.

Ask for it as a single package with the permit number on it. Loose photographs of a hole prove very little six months later.

Checking A Contractor Before You Book

Suffolk County requires every home improvement contractor advertisement to carry the contractor's license number. Whether tank removal falls inside that licensing definition is not spelled out in the county code, so treat the number as something to ask for and verify rather than assume.

Ask for the license number and the Part 364 waste transporter permit number in the same message. A company that cannot produce either is not one whose certificate will satisfy an underwriter.

Questions On This

When did oil tank abandonment paperwork start being required in Islip?

We could not verify a start date for the Town's current requirement from a primary source, so we are not going to name one. What we can confirm is that the requirement appears in the Town's published permit requirements document, which carries a June 16, 2025 version stamp.

I have an old certificate from a previous owner. Is it still good?

It depends on what it shows and whether the closure needed county permission at the time. Send it over and we will tell you whether it answers the question being asked of you now.

Is there a Suffolk County certificate of oil tank abandonment I can request?

The county code requires the written declaration to go to the Commissioner for non-exempt tanks, but we could not verify a public county-issued certificate, a form number or a fee from the county's own website. Contact the Department of Health Services directly rather than trusting a contractor's description of it, including ours.

What The Lender Asked For

You do not need the tank size or the install date. The property address and who is waiting on the paperwork is enough to price the job and set a date.
